AMD recently briefed the delay of their upcoming 16 core high end CPU part, the Ryzen 9 3950X. AMD originally planned to release the 3950X this September but mentions November as the new release period. We reckon AMD strugles with the 7nm yields of chip manufacturer TSMC, supported by the fact that AMD is not able to meet up with the demand of their momentarily highest end SKU the Ryzen 9 3900X that shares the same physical chip layout.

Both Ryzen 9 3900X/3950X share the same 2 CCD / 4 CCX layout (3900X 3 cores per CCX active, 3950X 4 cores per CCX). The Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 5 3600(X) have one CCD each with respectively 2 CCX’s and pose less of a problem looking at E-tailers stock.

the announcement of AMD also brings something positive as a release in November means they probably expect yields to become better the coming weeks and hopefully also availability of the Ryzen 9 3900X in Europe.

Besides Ryzen Matis news, AMD also announces the release of Threadripper 3rd gen. in November 2019. The first part being a 24 core part and will most certainly support PCI-E 4.0 with a lot of PCI-E lanes based upon the same 7nm proces as Ryzen non HEDT cpu’s. If you think 24 cores is a lot just wait for the top model. There are rumors that the highest end Threadripper cpu could feature 64 cores, possibly the Threadripper 3990WX which is closely related to an AMD EPYC server cpu. We think you should take this rumor with a grain of salt because a 64 core desktop cpu could be conflicting with pricing and market strategies for either Epyc (Prof. cpu) and Treadripper (Consumer cpu).
